  • The value of homework

  • The local church’s role in counseling
  • Discerning the issues of the heart
  • Comparing different counseling methods
  • Formal and informal counseling
  • Counseling and the law

What is Biblical Counseling?

Biblical counseling is a method of counseling that holds that “the Bible, given by God, is sufficient for life in that when properly interpreted, it reveals to the believer all the data necessary for one to understand his need for Christ, how he can please the Lord, and how to live in a God-honoring way regardless of the circumstances.

In biblical counseling the gospel is paramount. Long-term change is impossible without a right understanding and acceptance of the Gospel. The gospel affects every area of our lives. For example, why do we seek to serve? because Christ first served us. Why do we lay down our lives for others? Because our Lord Jesus Christ laid down his life for others. How do we deal with the fear of man? By looking at how God is the only one worthy of fear. He, through his work on the cross, has given us a new identity, we are now his children.

“Those who practice biblical counseling believe that genuine heart change is dependent on the ministry of the Holy Spirit. Thus, the counseling practice includes the importance of prayer, dependence on God, a thorough knowledge of the Word of God, and an understanding of ministering to the people.”1 For more information, visit www.biblicalcounselingcoalition.org.Fo
